The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old. All schools and Ofsted-registered early years providers must follow the EYFS.

Many pre-school and primary programs are modeled on Piaget’s theory, which, as stated previously, provided part of the foundation for constructivist learning, the theory of cognitive development explains how a child constructs a mental model of the world.

Like Piaget another psychologist named Lev Vygotsky proposed a theory that became very influential in the field of education, they believed that children learn actively and through hands-on experiences. His sociocultural theory also suggested that parents, caregivers, peers and the culture at large were responsible for developing higher order functions,by interacting with others, learning becomes integrated into an individual’s understanding of the world.

Child development theories center on various aspects of development including social, emotional and cognitive growth. Montessori based all her theories on what she had observed of their behaviours, she believed that they were capable of extended periods of concentration; enjoyed repetition;‘revelled in freedom of movement’, preferred work to play; were self-motivated and self-disciplined; enjoyed silence and harmony; and were capable of learning to read and write.
